Travel writing is a long-established literary format. One of the earliest examples is the writing of Pausanias,
around 200 AD, Description of Greece, based on his own observations.
Travelogues, travel journals, travel diaries. The internent has made another variation:
Travel blogs. Online we can access thousands of travel reviews and commentaries from travellers who provide candid,
up-to-the-moment and on-the-spot reports. They are a great place to unearth unique tips and read about specialist
topics. And it's interactive: online readers can communicate with the traveler--ask questions, request more
specific information or make a comment. They create a social environment: readers become part of the experience
too.
There are an estimated 200 million travel-related blogs on the net, with hundreds more being
launched each day. There are blogs detailing city nightlife, food blogs, blogs for backpackers, blogs for business
travel or family travel or traveling with pets, blogs critiquing restauants and blogs bloging about how to
blog.
One such blog caught my eye while browsing one night. David Lee began the Go
Backpacking blog in January 2007, while working as a Customer Service Manager for a Fortune 50 health insurance
company. His goal was to document the planning involved for my upcoming trip around the world, while learning
how to blog effectively.
As he put it, "I soaked up best practices, studied internet marketing strategies, and built relationships with
fellow travel bloggers, my social life went down the drain. I became addicted to blogging, and a Friday night
tweaking code in a WordPress theme was suddenly my idea of a good time."
When it came time to travel, he applied everything he learned, and thus built
